community futures action plan

As mentioned previously, The Trust via the Port Glasgow Regeneration Centre has an active involvement in the regeneration of Port Glasgow and has produced, in partnership with Inverclyde Council Community Work and Community Futures, the Port Glasgow Community Action Plan.

This document outlines the hopes and ideals for the future of the town, as provided by the people through community engagement.

The regeneration of the town is well underway and already considerable physical change can be noted with the construction of a new supermarket, revised main road layout, redevelopment of several derelict buildings into showpiece flats, other new housing and a new Civic Square.

Much more can be done though, particularly in terms of social regeneration and during this period of transition is the right time to do all we can to actively take part and change the town for the better. Our work in this area to date has included surveying the town to gain indicators of what the people need and would like to see provided in the town.

We are now working towards bringing these ideas to fruition by creating several action groups who will work to differing yet related mandates and bring as many of these ideas as possible to life. The net result of this should be to make the town a better place to live in, to work in and to see. It is hoped the town will become a viable base for new and existing business and industry, an attractive place for tourists to visit and a healthier, safer and more stable community.

The main areas identified by residents are to do more for young people, create a town centre to use and be proud of, advance recreation and play facilities, enhance awareness of our river, our heritage and our future, promote and actively maintain community safety, further develop care and social services and build the strength of the community. Each area has several subsections each outlining various topics and points of action.

The Community Action Plan has already won wide acclaim from community groups, politicians, third sector organisations and many residents of Port Glasgow.
