about us Our Regeneration Centre is based in the heart of the town and provides a very specific and badly needed resource to the area - a meeting place for groups to come together to focus efforts for the betterment of the town, a base of operation for these efforts to be enacted and an outlet for information, advice and a workplace for groups or organisations connected with the improving of Port Glasgow. We have worked with the Small Town And Rural Development Group in a Community Futures project, collating ideas from the local community on what they would like to see done with the town, and culminating in the Port Glasgow Community Action Plan. Our work also includes engaging the wider community in becoming aware of their environment and the ways that they can be involved in regeneration projects, for example through joining community councils or groups. To this end we are fortunate to be able to work closely with Inverclyde Council’s Community Work section staff and have their personnel work from our facilities. We believe that we provide a positive force in assisting the regeneration of the area. A part of this may be through the open-door policy we have with the people, in order that they feel free to come to us with their views or in seeking advice, where we are happy to forward comments to the appropriate parties. As a result, our presence has been welcomed by the community and people provide positive feedback on our work, all the time making our engagement so much easier. A main, but largely unseen part of our work is that ensuring that the community is not left behind in the regeneration process. In doing so, we aim to provide access to services and support for people in the area. This is achieved by introducing Trust services, providing in-Centre short courses, setting up groups and facilitating meetings of community groups and organisations. All these parts may seem unrelated, however without our work in providing the access, facilities and behind-the-scenes organisation, the jigsaw would not be complete and it is possible that the area would be worse off as a result. |
